Usually it's the over bleaching and iron in the water that causes the yellowing in white cotton. I've used over-the-counter "blue" to add to your whites. Be sure to make sure you use very little to the water first, and while the washer is agitating, than add your whites. Otherwise, you'll have nice blue clothes if poured directly.

there is a whitener by the brand name 'UJALA'..this is an indian product...u just have to dip the once-washed-white clothes in the mixture made by few drops of Ujala in water and keep it for drying...

wash with bleach when possible, or use gentle cleaners like woolite regularly. use a water purifyer to remove iron and other impurities during washing, and oxy clean doesn't hurt.
