He claims that he saw it back in the 1950's maybe. He said that he thinks that his father had one. He also told me that it was something you could put your razor in and it would straighten the blade. He says that blades get dull because of the curvature of the blade after one shaves. He told me that maybe razor blade companies bought this patent. Have you ever seen one of these devices? I don't think he is talking about something like a blade sharpener either.

Years ago, maybe the sixties, there was a commonly held belief that pyramids had magical properties, especially pyramids made out of aluminum foil. This was supposed to be one of the magical qualities; that if you kept a razor blade in a pyramid made of aluminum foil, it would never get dull.

All this was bunk, of course. But a few people really did believe it.

No way did razor blade companies "buy up" the idea of making pyramids out of aluminum foil so razor blades would never get dull. I think you're father's joking(at least I hope he is!)

Maybe he's trying to test your critical thinking.

Hi. I do not know about the '50s but we have the option to put a thin diamond coating on blades today rather cheaply. The manufacturers probably would not like this!

I don't know this for a fact, but I'm going to say that either...

1.) it was not cost-effective. We can now make new blades cheap enough to just replace them.

or

2.) Truth in advertising back then wasn't what it is now (and it still is pretty sketchy). Tons of products made outrageous claims. This may have been one of them.

There used to be a pyramid-shaped box you could buy that alleged it would keep razors sharp if you stored them under it, but I believe the people selling them all got locked up for fraud. Perhaps that's what Pop is remembering?

Urban legend. Exactly like "oil companies bought the 100 miles per gallon carburetor to keep it off the market".

I think you are referring to a razor mate.
