No pest control was used. Could there be something in the apartment causing them to die? Could it be harmful for my health?

Ants die very easily. It could just be a climate other than what they're used to. Even if it is a harmful chemical, I don't believe that it would be enough to harm you. Also, it could just be people that stepped on them. If you're that worried, I suggest you go buy a carbon minoxide detector. I honestly doubt that you need to be worried about anything other than that.

I own a pest control company in Chicago and have worked in the industry for a while now. There could be multiple reasons why the ants are dying. No one could tell you the absolute reason why they are dying over the internet. I will give you a couple of reasons why I have seen ants just die in the past decade.

Also, ants can be very resilient..and don't usually just die off without some sort of treatment.

1. As someone mentioned....WATER. They may not have a reliable water source and could have dehydrated. Usually they will leave and go somewhere else before they just die though.

2. Someone could have used a long residual pesticide like Talstar or Termidor. That would last about 3 months and could give the ants plenty of time to get it brought back to their colony. Ants groom each other like cats and could easily spread the disease and pesticide to each other.

3. I guess there are many other factors. Weather, previous treatments, type of ant, size of colony, neighboring ant population or other predators.

I would guess that your health is not in jeopardy. Most pesticides used today have very low LD 50 ratings. This means that you are probably ok.

Could be some floor washing liquid you are using. Pest control spray acts for a long time because the spray turns to Crystal that tears the hair off the legs of insects causing them to loose their grip and eventually die. Perhaps floor washing liquid is doing the same. No, I do not think it is harmful.

Who give a damn about your health when ants are dying.

Ants are God's creatures just like you & I are. They have feelings. I suggest that you call in an expert in an attempt to save the lives of these poor ants.

Is it possible that the apt complex had their quarterly/biannual pest control spray and you don't know about it? Even if they only sprayed outside the ants may have gone inside to die...
