What makes people tick? Why do they have to have the best of the best? Is it the fashion statement? The prestige of having it before anyone else? Why do americans continually spend money on the latest fad?

Americans spend money for the same reason that the British, the Swedes, the Chinese, the Italians, the Germans, the Fiji Islanders, the Russians, the Saudi Arabians, the Iranians, the Bulgarians, the Everybody and anybody that comes to your mind spends money.
Your question would make more sense if you'd change the word AMERICAN to PEOPLE. Americans do not like nice things any more than any other nationality.

Because they feel they've earned it, which they have. If you worked five days a week for ten hours a day, for the past five years, then you've earned every right to buy a new plasma television. Even if you don't work ten hours a day or even five, it's your money!
What do you mean by fashion statement? I doubt a person who is 25 would buy a plasma television just so they can make a "fashion statement"
Most people who call others selfish and greedy are morons, if I were to buy my self a brand new computer with my MONEY that I worked hard for, I would be considered selfish and greedy?
I say buy whatever you wan't! It's your money, you've earned. Don't let others put you down. People who put others down about what they buy for themselves are just jealous, it's obvious.
But I do agree if a married man with no kids, has three very nice an expensive cars, that is being greedy. If he rubs it in peoples faces then yes thats being selfish and rude, and he doesn't deserve it.

Why do people generalize that ALL AMERICANS are the same?
I'm American and the vast majority of the people I know are conservative with their money.
Because of American TV and films, it appears that all Americans care about is being glitzy and glamourous. While this may be true for the minority, the majority of Americans do not spend their money on the latest fads and fashions. Actually, the majority of Americans CAN'T spend their money on frivolous crap because they can't afford it!
