I heard that having your heat too low can freeze the water pipes or break the heater or something. How low is too low. Right now my house is at 55 but I will still be paying a lot even though that is cold for heat i am not there to use. Thank you

If you are in a cold climate set it at 45.If in a warm climate set the A/c for about 85-90. This prevents the pipes from freezing in the cold and mold forming from moisture in the heat. Either way have a trusted friend or family member check on the house at least weekly for any emergencies or burglaries.

You can turn off the heat if you winterize your house. That means that you turn the water off at the outside main valve. Then you bleed all the water out of the interior lines. If you have never done that before, then you will need help from a plumber. You also have to worry about other things in your house freezing like musical instruments, house plants and so on.

I have built houses, plumbed them, and most anything else. I have also been a medical facility manager and am a fireman. In all cases when we leave a place in the winter, when pipes may freeze, we set the themostat to 50 as a standard. That has been what everyone I have known and read said to do.

I wouldn't go below 50 degree F if you live in a colder region like Canada as your pipes near the exterior walls could freeze and break.

I would say it depends on where you live. I would be afraid to turn it completely off if you live in a colder climate where your pipes could freeze.

You can turn it off if you make sure the water lines have been purged. also cover any sink drains so the water in the trap doesn't dry out.
