It is a wonderful book. One I was assigned to read in college and thoroughly enjoyed. I don't know about themes to look for. But it is certainly her journey--her experiences--with men of all social statuses and her up and down climb on the social ladder. At times she's at the top of the world, in love and seemingly having it all...and the next she's at the bottom barely struggling to survive and willing to do anything to do so. Her journey is one from innocence to experience.

Sorry if this doesn't help but another book to read that works the 'theme' of Moll Flanders really well is 'The Observations' by Jane Harris. One of the best narrative works I have ever read - the pitiful girl of humble origins climbing the social ladder and aspiring to the nouveaux riche circles where she is able to survive the best....and she will do anything she can to get there!

Status and the importance of your social standing during that period of time. It is a theme running through the book and underpins a lot of the story. How your status affects the way people behave towards you, etc.

Count her husbands!
She is a survivor and a social climber; her earliest aspiration is to be a "gentlewoman" because the gentlewomen (probably a slang term for a whore) locally wear a clean shift every week without fail.
I enjoyed it but it is many years since I read it.
