Something like that you know that organizations, whatever their purpose, cannot fulfill their mission without good tracking and accountability of their resources and that you enjoy being able to help meet the responsibilities of the organization by helping them keep track of their resources.

General guideline. Make your answer to be in the best interest of the organization. Never to be in your own interest. "Because it's good money" is a sure fire way not to get the job.

The only answer that will be convincing is one that comes from your heart. Do you enjoy using the skills that accounting requires? Do you get satisfaction from the results (which and why)? Do you take pride in the role that an accountant plays and/or the influence one has in a business scenario? Off the top of my head, these are a few avenues of thought you might like to pursue to help you develop YOUR answer. Good luck.

Can you name one successful organisation that did not have a top notch accountant on board.

One of the criteria all successful business are rated by is there finances. All SUCCESSFUL business persons need to understand financial reports. Accounting is the basis for providing this information.

I like accounting because I like working with the detail, and REALLY helping businesses...unlike business coaches who inflate egos, and then let the business owner fly off like a popped balloon.

Tell them that you respect the structure and order of accounting and the value it provides to an organization. Mention how it is an effective management tool that provides useful and salient information, and that you want to be a part of that process.

I love to make things balance, I love putting it all together kind of like figuring out a puzzel and what makes my job so rewarding is when I make everything balance perfectly, bringing it all together, for one big picture of the whole opperation.

You could say: I think counting beans is fun. And in the alternative, I am creative and can make things disappear into thin air or appear from nowhere, not that I would.
