I think leaptad´s idea is great:

FIFTY NIFTY UNITED STATES
Words and Music- Ray Charles

Chorus
Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies,
Fifty nifty stars in the flag that billows so beautifully in the breeze.
Each individual state contributes a quality that is great.
Each individual state deserves a bow; Let's salute them now!

Fifty nifty United States from thirteen original colonies,
Shout'em, scout'em, Tell all about'em
One by one, ‘til we've given a day to ev'ry state that's in the USA.,
In the USA...

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut,
Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana.

Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan,
Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada.

New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico,
New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio!

Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas.

Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

You can find a blank U.S. map at http://www.theodora.com/maps/new5/usa_color.gif

You will find it easiest to put the states into regions, such as ...
New England: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island

Mid-Atlantic: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia

South: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida

Midwest: Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio

Great Plains: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas

Mountains: Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico

West Coast: Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, Hawaii

Go through one region at a time until you know all the states in that region, and then move on to the next one.

learn them in small groups such as 5 at a time. This is the way our brains work. Also, I heard that if you create a silly story piecing all the states(or whatever you need to memorize) together, this will help you remember also. Good luck!

Mnemonics.

INTRODUCTION

Mnemonics (pronounced "ne-mon'-ics") is the art of assisting the memory by using a system of artificial aids - rhymes, rules, phrases, diagrams, acronyms and other devices - all to help in the recall of names, dates, facts and figures.

Basic mnemonics

These mnemonics can be applied immediately, although it certainly pays off to practice them first. All of these mnemonics are based on elaboration and association, which why we start out with these. Elaboration adds more meaning to a word, while association makes sure that two words are thoroughly linked together in memory.

There is a song called the Fifty Nifty United States. I bet you could find it somewhere on the internet. Learn it and you'll know all the states.

It takes the human brain 144 times of repetition to learn a new task (scientifically proven). print or get a list of the states and say them out loud 1 at a time till you get it right, you need to hear yourself say them. you will soon learn them.

first make a list of the states and then put them in abc order. when in abc order study them in groups of a's, b's, c's, and so on. also try to remember how many began with each letter.

it's easiest to write them out.

get a blank map of the states and make like 10 photocopies.

start filling out the ones you know in black ink, and then when you don't know anymore...look at a map and write the new ones down in red ink...

just keep filling out those maps until you remember more and more...
