Did you work in the State of North Carolina at any point in 2002? If so, you may be required to file a tax return, even if no tax is owing. If your income is in excess of a certain figure, (you will need to check with North Carolina on what that is), you may have to file.

If you did no work in the State of North Carolina, then you need to contact the state to determine if perhaps there has been a mistake in reporting, or if someone has used your social security number.

From the employer or employers you worked at, they have to keep copies. Otherwise you just have to prove that you were in another State working to cover your time with other W-2's. The IRS also has all the copies where you worked and when from all States the employers turned in. I would ask them to send you a copy, that would be the easiest way.

You might try contacting the IRS. They should have a file on you, including any W-2s you submitted with your return that year. I think they charge a fee to reprint it, but if you can't get ahold of your previous employer, that may be your best bet.

And let this be a material example of why you need to keep ALL your tax records (back seven years).

Call the IRS and request copies of your W-2 forms for the specified year and they will send it to you within 7 Business days! It works! I did it for years 2003,2004 and 2005. It sent me all W-2 forms for the specified years.

Since you are suppose to keep all of your past tax records, find the file that you filed yours in and send them a copy.
