The range of material available on MySpace, and in private email, easily violates that which is allowed by most school's acceptable use agreements. It is unreasonable to expect that faculty or staff will be standing over the students shoulders, reading as they read, so it is much simpler to block access to private email accounts and sites like MySpace.

FWIW, there are sites set up especially for use by schools to allow the use of blogging as an educational tool. That allows them to explore social networking in the academic setting, which gives them the best of both worlds, in some ways.

You have to ask yourself if a straight dating site is inappropriate also. If you don't think so then the gay dating site is appropriate. Keep in mind if you single this person out and it comes to be that other students that are straight are looking at similar thing you could be reprimanded or worse lose your job if your student decides to take action against you which will go on your work record. It would be very hard to find a job if this goes that far. If you don't want your students on these sites then you need to be clear that it goes for all the students. Would also be smart to consult a human resources individual for appropriate action.

Students are not in school to goof off. They are there to learn. Our tax dollars pay for their learning opportunity.

Additionally, with all the problems teens have had with internet stalkers and pedophiles the schools feel they are not going to be a vehicle for harmful material or people. If you check the news, there have been reported cases of teens and pre-teens meeting someone online, and planning a face-to-face meeting, just to discover the person is not who they claimed to be. Just as it is a parent's responsibility to safeguard a child at home, it is the school's responsibility to safeguard the children while in school.

becaue if a virus is sent through the child's e-mail or myspace account then it will screw up all the computers in the school, since they are all in the same network. schools rather spend money on education then fixing computers.

Because they're big meanies who actually think it's more important for you to spend your time at school learning such trivial things as how to construct properly worded questions.

It might also be because they know a lot of parents wouldn't allow you to do such things at home, and if you do them - you're sneaking around behind your parents' backs - and they're not going to help you do that!
