The effect is equal. A calorie is defined as the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius. From this, you can see that for a given amount of water, raising the temperature by a given amount will always take the same amount of energy, regardless of the starting temperature.

If you look at the amount of heat transfer to the liter of 20 C from 30 C water, it is the same as the amount of heat transer to the 30 C from the 40 C, since the amounts are the same and the temp difference is 10 C in both cases.

Hope that helped!

The Hot and cold will not mix straight away, the hot water will stay at the top and the cold at the bottom. The will mix when they acheive equal temperature.

As time passed the hot water will worm the cold and the cold will cool the Hot so they have equal action on each other.

The water will eventually reach the same temp and completley mix.

Try this next time you are in he bath. If you fill it first with hot then put in cold you will find it wormer at the top.
