If you mean WW1, then Britain declared war on Germany on 4th August 1914, following the German army's violation of Belgian neutrality on its was to invade France. Britain had a treaty with Belgium which guaranteed its neutrality and also had an understanding (the entente cordiale) with France of its support should France be invaded.
If you mean WW2, then Britain entered the war on September 3rd 1939 after Germany had invaded Poland on September 1st. Britain had a treaty with Poland which guarenteed its protection should it be invaded. Prior to that, Britain had followed a policy of appeasement towards Germany, despite its annexations of Austria and the Sudetanland in Czechoslovakia.
