he's a disgrace to the sport, as is Bonds. I long for the days of A. Bart Giamatti, the commissioner who banned Pete Rose and would have never tolerated this crap. Selig is too weak.

I really don't have a feeling one way or the other on McGwire not making it.

Statistically the only thing that would get him in his 583 home runs. Every other career stat is mediocre at best. I think he'll get in, but he is in no way a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

McGwire is a down year candidate who will get in eventually and that's all there is to it.

Pete Rose will find his way in eventually as well. I'm pretty sure that the Veteran's Committee will vote him in after he's dead, Shoeless Joe Jackson style.

I just wish people would stop trying to make the argument that McGwire didn't get voted in b/c of steroid suspicion. Sure it played a roll in his not getting inducted, but so did his subpar career stats.

Suspicion isn't a good enough reason to keep anyone out of the Hall, mediocre stats are. It's not a Hall of Morality, it's a Hall of Fame based on what a player did on the field. That's why Barry Bonds and Raphael Palmeiro should still be inducted. Should they be voted Man of the Year or given some sort of award for their drug-induced efforts, probably not.

But they could all play ball and that's what got them to the show. You can either hit a ball or you can't. They all could. At some point some or all of the superstars of the steroid era decided they needed a little something extra and others followed suit to stay on an even playing field.

Personally, I don't care. I just want to watch some baseball.

I have to disagree with the guy above me who said that McGwire's statistics are "subpar," with the exception of his home run totals. You compare him negatively with Palmeiro, but it was Big Mac who had a higher OBP and higher slugging numbers. Sure, Palmeiro had a higher BA, but I think any real baseball fan realizes that BA is not the best measure of a hitter. Mac also won a Gold Glove and Rookie of the Year, while leading the league in power categories numerous times.

Personally, I don't think he should be admitted until we have more perspective about how many players cheated, the extent of the cheating, and what it meant to their career totals. Right now, there's just no way of knowing about many of the players from the Steroid Era. I'd rather err on the side of caution, because you can always put someone in, but can't take them out.

As for the comparison with Rose, it doesn't really work. Mac was wrong for doing the 'roids, but he didn't break any rules that were on the MLB books at that time. Rose, on the other hand, knowingly violated a rule that had been on the books since the time of Commissioner Landis.

Many of McGwire's accomplishments, particularly his home run surge late in his career, hitting 70 home runs, have come into question with his connection to the steroid scandal plaguing Major League Baseball. After an article written by Associated Press writer Steve Wilstein, McGwire admitted to taking Androstenedione, a dietary supplement banned by the NFL and IOC. It should be noted that Androstenedione was an over-the-counter supplement and was not a banned substance in baseball or the FDA at the time. So why do we punish him after-wards...if Baseball did not have a firm stance or policy on steroid use prior to McGwire's admonishment of steroid use then why should he now be punished for it...makes not sense...and fo the record...Pete Rose should be in the hall of fame...his gambling had no bearing on his accomplishments on the field. My two cents..

You can't keep McGwire out yes he used performance enhancing drugs but they were not banned by mlb at the time. You can say what you want but who can forget 70 homeruns or 49 in his rookie year...i mean a rookie hitting 49 homeruns thats unheard of...I mean you can use all the steriods you want but if you dont make contact with the ball it isnt going to help you any. Without a doubt Mcgwire should be inducted along with Pete Rose...both are some of the best players of their era and you'd be stupid to keep them out

He clearly used some sort of performance enhancing drug or supplement toward the end of his career. How else does a slightly better than average hitter suddenly hit 70 HR's when he gets older? He also admitted to using Androstenedione, a performance enhancing substance which at the time was banned by the NFL and IOC, but not by MLB. The real question is do we want someone who beyond a shadow of a doubt used a performance enhancing substance to gain his records, even though that substance was not at the time banned by MLB, to enter into the Hall of Fame?

You're right, he won't get in. Just fine by me.

If he hadn't sat like a statue during that Congressional hearing, or if he hadn't shrunk down to the size of Pee Wee Herman after leaving baseball, maybe he would have a chance.

The writers will penalize every big hitter from the steroid era, regardless of how prolific the numbers are.

Rose should be in HOF- he did nothing to interferre with how he played the games. Now for McGwire I think he'll eventually be elected into the HOF but not for a few years when possibly some greats(Ripken JR. and Gwynn) aren't up for election. Meaning a weaker election class.

Nope! Any man who refuses to come clean in front of congress can to be trusted ever!!!

A coward and a cheater.

A man like that has no business amongst great baseball players and the holy land they call the Hall of Fame.
