Assume you mean 4 + a².
4 + a² = 4 + 34² = 4 + 1156 = 1160
However you may be meaning 4 + 2a?
4 + 2a = 4 + 2 x 34 = 4 + 68 = 72
Take your pick!

4 + a2 : when a = 34
Substitute 34 for 'a'
4 +34(2)
This means 4 + (34 x 2)
4 + 68

4 + (34 times 2)
4+68 = 72
or if you mean 4+ (a to the power 2)
which can be written as 4 + a^2
4 + 34^2
4+ 1156 = 1160

In the term 4+a2 it is assumed that ax2 is intended .Therefore
the answer would be 4+(34x2) = 4+68 Therefore answer would be 72.
Or in the original term is (4+a) x2 inferred. Therefore the answer
would then be (34+4) x 2 ,and then the answer would be 76.
Get it! I don`t ! It appears to be a badly written formula.

Sheeza,
The answer is 72. If a=34, a2 is simply a way of saying 34 x 2 which equals 68. 4+68=72.
If you mean a-squared, on the other hand, your equation is 4+34x34 which equals 1160.
