We do not want to go to Palm Springs, Big Bear, Julian or Las Vegas. I want to surprise my husband with a weekend trip that isn't expensive that is a pretty little town or something romantic within about four hours from San Diego in a car. Any suggestions on where and accommodations? Please describe in detail. I'd love your advice!

Find a nice hotel just outside town with a private jacuzzi , if you drink wine chill some . Wear something sexy and see through, let your inhibitions fly out the window and the both of you will have more fun than you ever had. Hey, Hotels are very sexy specially on the beach!

It depends on what you consider inexpensive, $50 or $200 a night and exatly what you wanted. I.E. Resort, B&B, Hotel...

Here are some ideas

Laguna Beach - Small beach town with a lot of shops and resturants. Beach at Sunset can be very romantic. About 90 minutes north of San Diego

Santa Barbara - Beach town that will have several options depending on what you like to do.

Solvang - In the Hills north of Santa Barbara.

Both Santa Barbara and Solvang will be just about 4 hours north of San Diego depending on where you are starting from.

The Rosarito Beach Hotel, just across the Border, a historic place with good food, bar, and entertainment, right on the beach.

Hotel La Fonda in La Mision, just a bit further south, great bar, right on the beach, very romantic. Younger crowd on the weekends. Call 646-15-50307

Both on the internet.

No such animal. I lived in San Diego all my life. There are the places you say you don't want to go and then there is the desert or mexico. Rosarita beach was always a nice little getaway, also around Ensenada was a place called Granada Cove right on the ocean (this place has fully furnished little cabins and trailers-all you have to bring is food)

Ensenada Mexico, I usually take an express bus from TJ, just over the boarder. The drive is about 2 hours. It is a great town, very friendly, romantic, inexpensive, safe and clean. Great hotels on the water, lots of shops, restaurants, etc. Lots of cruise ships stop there, there is a great wine country right by there, like Napa 25 years ago, believe it or not, Mexico makes great wine. Check for hotel ratings and deals on tripadvisor.com. You won't regret it.
