Well, I believe Seagate (who recently acquired Maxtor last year) is now the largest HD manufacturer in the channel. Over the last several years many of the players have either gotten acquired or gone away. Now, the major players I think are Seagate, WD, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Hitachi (who acquired IBM, right?).

Fujitsu is majoring on laptop HD and high end storage appliances, last I heard. I am very impressed by Seagate's latest product line, but have also had good success with Western Digital and Toshiba product. My vote goes to Seagate.

Best to you.

For standard desktop computing, they all average out to be the same in quality these days. (Although I do remember the old Quantum fireball *shakes fist to sky*)

If you want to look more into rapid response or quality for High speed computing though, I highly suggest you review the article here: http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/16/2007-hdd-rundown/index.html

Use the pulldown near the bottom to go from page to page. Tomshardware does some great articles, and this one is no exception.

At this point they are all about the same - I haven't heard about any brand with recurring problems. Narrow it down based on your requirements (primarily interface, size, speed, and RAID capability) and then look at price and warranty. I would check out NewEgg and ZipZoomFly and compare.

Seagate is very good these days, though I wouldn't have recommended them a few years ago. They also have very good warranties.

I've had good luck with the Hitachi drives I'm using in my desktop and laptop.

Seagate HDD's in my opinion are the best HDD.

I have been running Seagate's for years now and haven't had any problems with them at all except one (was a bad batch).

I have been running 2 120GB Seagate's for 3y 2m 7d 19h (S.M.A.R.T http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology) so yea it's been a few years ive been running them without fault.

Seagate HDs are very good, especially technologically speaking.
But if you are after performance I would suggest you to go for WD's Raptor series.
Its up to you to choose: Seagate reliability or WD extreme performance (Raptor series)

I like Maxtor, if anything goes wrong with the hard drive you can call them and get a new one for low to nothing as they stand by what they sell........unless of course the user is the problem.........
