Had usb key attached to pc when i formatted and installed new version of xp. Now can't acces the key. The system says that it needs to be formatted, but it won't allow me to do that.

It could be goosed! If you can read data to it and from it then you should be able to format it like any other external drive. If you get errors about cyclical redundancy then it's toast!

I'm presuming that you mean a 2GB USB key. 2 Meg would be incredibly small ... just under the size capable of being held by two floppy disks.

Check to see if there's a little switch on the side of your USB key (usually just a small point that you'd slide along. You may need a pin or something, unless you've got finger nails.) The slider would write protect or write enable the key. Sometimes they're so easy to move into the position that you don't want them to be.

Have you tried it in another USB port too?

You could try rebooting with the USB key already plugged in, or try rebooting again and then insert the USB key.
