I agree with rawr - consider the nature of the character. Great detectives from the tough guy mode sound like gritty guys from the tough guy mold like Mike Hammer, Sam Spade, John Steed - even Remington Steele or James Bond. Of course, your protagonist doesn't have to be a "tough guy," but the name can reflect the personality - Encyclopedia Brown, for example. How about someone whose curiosity gets them into all sorts of problems being named George Sawyer, after the Curious monkey and Twain's rapscallion Tom. A detective willing to go to the depths of hell to get his man might be named Dante; a hero always on a quest may be Odysseus or Ulysses. Your foil may have a vague name like Dr. No or something that sounds vaguely classical like Hannibal Lecter - consider a reference to Greek or Roman gods as a first or last name: Bacchus, or Mars. Have fun.

Depends on the character. If you have a klutz, maybe his last name could be Faller. Have a good guy character? Maybe name him Gabrielle. (male or female version)
Also, give them names that you find particulalry interesting, even some that you have made up.
Giving chracters nicknames also seems to make a story more interesting.
Try to think of your character's personalities, and try to derive a name from the way the act and the role the have in your story. Good luck!
