As I understand it, the Sunnis are the ones forming the insurgency and killing the majority of Americans and Iraqis.

Is this another lack of comprehension by Bush or is he misleading the country and the world once again.

Like Iraq, why doesn't he ever go after those responsible and maybe, just maybe, he might get something right and stop the bloodshed.

Number one, many of the overwhelming problems we are dealing with in Iraq have to do with the fact that we had little understanding of Shia or Sunni culture, and the theological and political divide between them, going into our occupation. Bush, being the numbskull that he is, has even less understanding of the nuances that comprise these basic distinctions in the Islamic world. To him, and many of his cohorts, a Muslim is a Muslim. They don’t bother to quibble over the niceties of Islamic history or the various sectarian ideologies that divide a group of people.

Hence, the fact that Iran is primarily Shiites doesn’t factor into his strategic thinking (what ever little there is of it) at all. Bush is merely doing what all politicians tend to do when trying to mask their failures – SCAPEGOAT another country. By stating that the continued stridency of the Iraqi insurgency stems from the continued logistical, financial, and ideological support of Iran, absolves Bush, in the minds of his uncritical constituency, of any culpability for the failures that transpire in Iraq.

Of course to those of us, who are not his credulous supporters, that explanation, or should I say excuse, simply does not fly. We go one step further than his uncritical ilk and ask why it is that Iraq’s borders are allowed to remain so porous so as to allow for Iranian involvement? How is that a land that is supposed to be OCCUPIED by our military, can be so easily intruded upon and manipulated by a nefarious outside force? These two elementary questions ultimately underscore the incompetence of Bush’s administration and their mishandling of the occupation effort. For a soundly guided effort in Iraq would secure its borders so as to preclude influence from antagonistic outsiders. We don’t need to attack Iran and stretch our forces thinner than they already are. Instead we need to allocate enough forces to secure Iraq from within – something that could have been done if Bush heeded the recommendations of military experts and generals when they stated that a successful occupation required the use of 300,000 to 400,000 troops as opposed to grossly insufficient 150,000 troops that are there today. The failure of Iraq is not the result of Iran so much as the result of the Bush administrations incompetence and arrogance.

Well, we had that little 444 day long incident known as the hostages being taken at the US Embassy in Tehran in 1979. And back then, we hated Shi'a and were more amenable to the Sunni. That the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi (and therefore Sunni) proves there little variation in their hatred of the West.

To think that Iran is not supporting Shi'a insurgents within Iraq is short sighted. Remember, they did fight a war in the 80s.

It's possible Bush may go after them, especially if Ahmedinijab keeps snubbing the UN. Stay tuned.

Iran has the maximum Shia muslim populace on this planet however they're undoubtedly no longer the core/hub of shia islam. But they're the hub of Twelver Shia Islam for sure on that one. But Iraq is for sure the core and founding location of Shia Islam. It's residence to a few of Shia islam's such a lot holiest mosque and the last resting location of many descendants of Ali. This is coming from a Shia.

The Shi'ite majority is using death squads and extra-governmental paramilitaries to wreak havoc on the Sunni minority through murders. Iran is the primary benefactor of these home-grown insurgents.

They're working to make nukes and threatening to use them on us and our allies.

I don't care if they're Presbyterians; they're a threat!

Also, there is some evidence to conclude that they are supplying BOTH sides in Iraq. Anything to stymie the US is good for them.

Where do you think the Sunni's are getting all of their ammo? Iran is adding to this conflict because they are hoping we are so distracted, we will ignore their nuclear aspirations.
