I just googled "Car Seats" and looked under the news tab. I saw the report on CNN and I was appauled to see how bad some of them where. Here is what I found:

1.Of the 12 tested the Baby Trend Flex-Loc Adjustable Back or the Graco SnugRide with EPS were the best.
2. The Evenflo Discovery was below the federal standard of car seats and actually detached from the base causing the baby dummy to fly from the vehicle.
3. "The Chicco KeyFit, Compass I410, Evenflo Embrace, and Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP functioned well as long as the seat had a tight fit from the vehicle's safety belts rather than the LATCH system"
4. The other seats tested and found to have poor belt or latch results include the Britax Companion, the Graco SafeSeat, and the Combi Centre ST.
5. The Safety 1st Designer, sold as part of a travel system, had belt and latch problems.
6. Finally, the Eddie Bauer Comfort, discontinued but available in some stores, could not be installed securely, according to Consumer Reports.

Go to Nhtsa.gov to find a car seat inspection station.

Good luck!

10 car seats fail new crash tests

Consumer Reports is known for taking safety to the next level, and in its most recent round of testing rear-facing, infant car seats, it went beyond the current federal safety standards for seat performance in a collision. The government tests seats in front crashes of 30 mph, but Consumer Reports simulated front impacts of 35 mph and side impacts of 38 mph (the same standards used for car safety testing). The results in this more stringent environment were dramatic, with 10 of the 12 seats either twisting too far or coming out of their bases.

Consumer Reports' testing also showed serious failings in seats secured by the LATCH system. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) itself calls the LATCH system confusing and Consumer Reports notes that the NHTSA is planning a public hearing on the system later this year.

Here's how the seats fared in Consumer Reports' tests:

The Good
Baby Trend Flex-Loc Adjustable Back
Graco Snugride with EPS

The Bad
Chicco KeyFit
Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP
Compass I410
Evenflo Embrace
Britax Companion
Graco SafeSeat
Safety 1st Designer
Combi Centre ST
Evenflo Discovery
Eddie Bauer Comfort

Consumer Reports Claims Infant Car Seat Problems
(KUTV) Car seats should be standard equipment for families on the go. But when it comes to infant car seats most are not making the grade. Consumer Reports has some disturbing findings that may point to troubles with your infant car seat.

They are our most precious cargo but a startling new study finds your infant car safety seat may not protect your child in a crash.

The government uses a 30 mph frontal crash test for infant car seats. Consumer Reports went further.

"We tested at 35 miles per hour in a frontal crash, but we also added a 38 miles per hour side crash," said Don Mays of Consumer Reports.

The same standards the government uses to test new cars, but not car seats.

"It’s unconscionable that there's a different test method for vehicles that doesn't apply to infant seats," said Mays.

Of the twelve infant car seats Consumer Reports tested ten flunked the more rigorous testing.

Among them:

The Graco Safe Seat and the Britax Companion - which jumped off the seat, then slammed back again.

The Evenflo Discovery which flew off its base and the Eddie Bauer Comfort Seat which technicians were unable to properly install.

"We are clearly asking for a recall for the Evenflo Discovery as well as the Eddie Bauer Comfort," said Mays.

Only two performed well: the Baby Trend Flex Loc and the Graco Snugride with EPS

"I was really surprised that so many of them didn't make the grade," said Mays.

The manufactures stand by their products and question the testing methods used by Consumer Reports. With safety seats cutting the risk of injury or death by 71 percent everyone agrees any car seat is better than none.

Here is the complete list of infant seats and their rating from CR:

Not Acceptable:

-Evenflo Discovery
-Eddie Bauer Comfort

Fair or Poor:

-Chicco KeyFit
-Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP
-Compass I410
-Evenflo Embrace
-Britax Companion
-Graco SafeSeat
-Safety 1st Designer
-Combi Centre ST

Very Good

-Baby Trend Flex-Loc Adjustable Back
-Graco SnugRide with EPS

This link has a list of the car seats that failed and the two seats that did well at the bottom of the article. The baby trend flex loc and the Graco snugride with EPS are the two that did the best in the testing.

Go to this site find the manufacturer of the carseat that your child is in. Bad lists of car seats are called recalls.

transportation Canada has a great setcion on car seats. which ones have been recalled ect. you can also get get info. on the proper installation of car seats. we have a "buckle up bears" program here that has certified people who will check on your installation. maybe there's something like that where you are. 'cause it doesn't matter how good your car seat is if it's not installed properly.

If you call the number on the back of the car seat, you can ask them right away if there is any recalls on the car seats.
