Could be a variety of problems. You have 3 options available to you.

1: Run chkdsk.
-Pop in your Windows XP CD and boot from it. On the very first screen that appears, press the "R" button to get to a recovery console. From this screen, type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes. This may take a few hours to complete, but it may fix the problem.

2: Do a repair install of Windows
-Again, boot from the CD. At the first screen, Press ENTER. At the next screen, press F8. The CD will scan your hard drive, and should then present you with the option of repairing your current installation of Windows. Press "R" to do this. Note: You will need to have your XP CD KEY available for this. Its usually on a sticker located at the back of your PC. If done properly, you won't lose any data from your PC. You will need to redownload all the Windows Updates after this is complete.

3: Format your friends computer and start from scratch.

The blue screen is.....

'The dreaded Blue Screen of Death!'

There is a major problem with the software.
You could try starting the PC with the 'page up' button pressed down. This resets the BIOS to its default value.
The other way is to put in your operating system disk to repair the fault, or your rescue disk to do the same or scan for viruses.

Worst case scenario?
Wipe the Hard Drive and reinstall everything.
Best case scenario?
Operating system disk repairs the problem.

If you take it to PC Doctor, dont let him con you into getting a new motherboard and cpu as this is rarely the problem.
The worst would be a full system install.
Good Luck.

hardware incompatibility = one or more of your components is incompatible. For example, if your video card is VGA and your
system requires SVGA, then your keyboard may lock up. Nowadays, most motherboards have an AGP slot for AGP video card. Also some motherboards are made for a particular operating system. Parts are less and less interchangeable.
Your computer hardware has to be put together right before the software will work right.

It very much looks like your friends Operating System is corrupted tell him to do a repair install of Windows and go from there if it continues it would likely be a ram problem.

To check the ram out download and run MEMTEST86 http://www.memtest86.com/ run this and it will scan the ram for signs of failure and if the test shows errors then replace the ram and if that fails it will likely be the motherboard causing the hickups.

You will need to get this looked at by a professional. Sounds like there is a loose piece of hardware, or the system has been corrupted.
It happened to me over Christmas, and they've had to replace the motherboard, hard drive and cpu!
so yeah, definitely a job for the professionals!

Boot up by CD using an AV disc. Run the AV CD from the Bootup, and check for virii. Alternatively, try and run the system from command prompt only and run defrag, as well as chkdsk/f
That should make some good changes

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
