You need to get them to a common denominator. That would be -8/28x-35/28x and that would equal -43/28x.

-2/7x - 5/4x
If this means -2 divided by 7x - 5 divided by 4x, then the answer is
-8/28x - 35/28x = -43/28x

If instead it means (-2/7)x-(5/4)x, then the answer is:
-2x/7 - 5x/4 = -8x/28 - 35x/48 = -43x/28.

Do you see why you should always use parentheses to make sure the question does not have more than one possible interpretation?
