I haven't ever gone yet, and i'm 20. I'm not sexually active. What age should one go that isn't sexually active?

the only thing i can say about you being scared about someone being down there, is that they have had every type of fat, smelly, hairy girl on that table with her legs spread. there is no need to be embarassed, they have seen it all, i used to be scared, now i dont even get nervous to go. i love my doctor, she walks in the room, yanks my thong up to my neck and gives me my shot in my butt. if you feel more comfortable with a woman doctor, then thats who you should see. like someone made a comment before, you need to watch out for HPV that causes cancer, anyone could have it. not only that, you gyno will check your breasts for lumps, so its just a really good idea to go get checked out.

You should probably mosey over there now-ish. The rule of thumb is 18 or when you've had sex... so even if you aren't sexually active now, you should still get seen.

It's really nothing to be afraid of. It takes about five minutes once a year, and the doc isn't getting turned on or anything by you. If you have a general practitioner who you are comfortable with, you can ask him/her to do a pelvic exam and pap smear at your next checkup: a gynecologist is not required unless you actually have a gynecological problem.

first of all, its not that bad. for some reason I feel more comfortable with a female gyno.
if you absolutely do not want to go, you will probably be okay as long as you don't have any irregular symptoms. You should do self breast exams (in the shower is a good place).

on a side note, you should consider getting the new HPV vaccine, even though you are not sexually active. I am encouraging all the females I know to get it. HPV can cause cervical cancer

You should already be going, regardless if you are sexually active or not. You should go one time per year after the age of 17. It's apart of your annual exam - to have a pap smear & breast exam done.

You should start getting annual check-ups and pap-smears at about age 18; also since you're not sexually active, NOW is a great time to get yourself the new HPV inoculation. It will help to prevent most strains of HPV-related cervical cancer, and that could save your life.

I've only ever seen the gynecologist once, and that was when I was 15 and had pains in my ovaries. My regular GP takes care of all my pelvic exams and pap smears.

It's time. 18 is usually the time to start going. Good job on not being sexually active. Men suck.

I am almost 30 and have only been to my family doctor. You should only have to go to a gyno when pregnant or if there is an abnormal pap, or breast lump.

18, but if your family has any history of female problems, earlier. You don't need to be sexually active to have ovarian cancer.
