A "slipped" disc is a laymans term for a herneation. A herneation is the inner part of the disc migrating ouwards or protruding out of the outer part. The inner part is like loose jelly while the outer part is more like a thicker jelly. There are a few types of herneation. The inner jelly can just be migrating outwards but not be outside the outer part. If it is a worse herneation the inner jelly can protrude out of the outer part and put pressure on a nerve, that's when there is a lot of pain. Some of the jelly can come loose and float about in the spinal cord area, this is extremely painful. I have never heard of a torn disk but maybe they're refering to the loose and floating type of herneation. Hope this helps.
