I've been watching NFL Football for a long time now and i have always been curious to know why most stadiums, if the game is played on artificial turf instead of natural turf, choose to put a natural shade of green on the artifical turf? I heard it somewhere that it was due to some of the complaints from some NFL players that it injures them real bad when they play on that color grass, which looks like carpet. Is that true?

Most NFL stadiums will not use the cement like turf anymore. They have moved to recreating a turf that involves the use of recycled rubber tires. I can't tell you the guy who thought of that idea, but he's a millionaire now! The darker shade probably comes from the rubber underneath. Next time you watch a football game (which hopefully will be this weekend), look at the players foot when they try to stop or cut...you will actually see pieces of the rubber from under the "grass".

The old turf was simply a carpet like material placed over concrete, and that is why players often got injured.

Hope this helped and make sure to look out for the rubber debree.

There are actually several explanations for this. First of all, Turf that is inside of domes can be darker because there is obviously no sun to bleach it, however, turf that is in open stadiums can actually lighten due to the sun bleaching.

There is also is the fact the artificial turf is usually more dense than real grass fields. For instance on a grass field you may have 10 blades of grass per square inch where as a turf field may have 15 or 20. This makes the grass look darker when it is actually only that there are more blades of "grass." Kind of like if you put a few dots on a paper it still looks white with dots but if you put thousands of dots on the paper it may begin to look like it is actually the color of the dots. In art this is called stipple I believe. Same effect.

Finally...there is obviously the quality of the product and what you want it to look like. Not all natural grasses are the same. Common grass is not the same color as Kentucky blurgrass. So it depends on what the buyer wants it took look like. Heck, Boise state wanted BLUE grass so their field is not the Blue monster. It is only die...I'm thinking of making my backyard into purple turf....I'm a saddened Ravens fan...Ha!

Lastly...if you are basing this on what you see on TV, then you could see "fake differences" because of the quality of the broadcast.

As far as I am aware (correct me if I am wrong) but artificial pitches are not allowed in the EPL. The COMS is definitely real grass as they have the sprinklers on pretty much before every match, and there would be no sense in watering artificial turf.

if i understand right, there are two differnt types, the lighter kind is harder, and yes very easy to get hurt on, the darker kind is usually the kind with like a rubber underneath, and does actualy feel like real grass when u walk in it...it has nothing to do with the color tho...the only reason why they would care about the color is for looks

Its b/c they need to be able to pick up the lines and balls the same (visually)making every venue as fair as possible. This sounds retarded, but its true
