You need to have a degree in Elementary Education to teach from K-9. Every school has different required courses. If you KNOW you don't want to teach anything higher than 3rd grade, you can get an Early Childhood Education degree that will allow you to teach PreK-3. With that degree you get paid much less, and usually just work in pre-schools because elementary school principals really need someone who they can move from grade to grade as needed, so they most likely won't hire you. You can get the Early Childhood certificate at a 2 year college who offers the dregree, but again, youll only really be able to work in pre-school.
*I live in Illinois and this info may be different where you are*

You must get a degree from a university that will allow you to teach Elementary Education, grades 1-5. Once accepted at the university, they will tell you the classes you will need in order to getv that degree. It takes around 4 years, on the average. Then you must take an exit test. It's a lifetime degree, so it is worth the investment of those classes.

Depending on the city and state you live in, you would need to be certified. In order to be certified, you would need to complete your bachelor's degree in either elementary education or early childhood education. Depending on the state, other requirements may be needed such as certification tests, proof that you are proceeding to get a master's degree.
As far as the types of classes you would need to take; the list goes on, child development, methods classes, tests and measurements, psychology, and so on and so on. Your best bet is to ask an advisor at your college. You would most likely have to take required liberal arts classes before you get into classes in your major. Classes like english lit, sociology, statistics, western civ, things like that.
Good luck!!!
