I had answered this question just a few days ago for another woman. I recommended not to try crunches because your back is going to start hurting soon anyways, so that workout will have to be dropped eventually. Working out, as long as it isn't too strenous, is perfectly fine, and most doctors prefer to have the mothers stay active because it can result in an easier labor. Walking works best for me, and I do light yoga 3-4 times a week since the stretching helps with leg cramps and back pain. Also, you end a yoga workout without feeling too exhausted, which is great since you shouldn't be overdoing it at all right now. But it's always best to be safe than sorry, so consult your physician!

Actually, they are fine as long as you don't do them lying on your back (after the first trimester). You can do crunches (not full sit-ups; be sure it is a small movement) on a fitness ball or with pillows piled up behind your back. I have a pregnancy exercise video (it's called The Perfect Pregnancy Workout) that has you do crunches with pillows behind you. Also, on babyfit.com they say it is ok on a fitness ball (if you are more advanced). Babyfit.com also has other ab exercises you can do if you would rather stay away from crunches.

NO!
Your abs will be under lots of stress because of your expanding tummy and you are more likely to suffer a separation - which will make things much tougher for you in the long run.

no, drs do not advise it, especaially any exercise on the back b/c it puts too much pressure on certain blood vessels that are very important for labor and delivery, (pressure can cause damage).
