Have you copied all the files you want to keep on to cd's and done a complete reinstall of Windows ? if not do this and your virus problems will go away if you don't have any memory resistant virus's that is.

And before you try going online again next time install a proper antivirus and make sure you keep it up to date.

You could always download/use the HDD manufacturers software to blank out the drive rather than replacing it. Depending on what you're wanting to save, it's too vague. Whatever you save, be sure to virus scan before putting back into the computer, and you can download free antivirus on the net to scan it, since you say you have them.
As far as I know, and that's not that much, there aren't too many viruses out there that can corrupt DVD players or modems but anything that has a stored or logged memory, like a BIOS on a motherboard, seem succeptable. This is worst case and in twenty years of computing I've never seen one.

Viruses and trojans won't destroy a hard drive. The HD is physically, fine. The only way to be certain you've gotten rid of them all, however, is to re-partition and reformat the drive. If you move your files over to a new HD you'll probably just take the viruses and trojans with you.

The best thing to do is just install fresh from the original disks. Also get the most up to date virus and anti-spam software's (from legitimate companies).

If you transfer over the things you want you could be transferring over files with "junk" attached to them and not even know it, thus defeating the purpose the new hard drive.

Unless you have the knowledge to do this yourself, DO NOT DO IT. Get a professional to install the operating system.

There is nothing wrong with your current hard drive. Viruses are simply programs. If you re-format your hard drive, all programs (including the viruses) will be erased. Of course it will be necessary to re-install your operating system and all software but you would still have the problem even if you decided to replace the hard drive.

bad idea.

you'll probably just end up messing the system up, or copying the viruses.

steps: backup all of your data (not the os or programsor EXE files!)
install windows
restore
