Use netsend command on command prompt

Depends on the network; Novell will allow a person to person ( or computer to computer) message; MS systems will allow the same, but usually with an admin access only... unless the Admin has opened up the command line send to regular users.
If you have Groupwise or Lotus notes with an integrated chat feature, it will do that, but then I assume you would already know about those

Start, Tools/Accessories, NetMeeting, Connect using LAN and chat with Sound, Video and Text. Also includes features such as drawing board.

Make sure both phones are on and then send your message and hey presto the one downstairs receives it

ALT_CTrl_DELETE then go to the last tab and send a message them
