Take the number, 640 and divide by (100-84%) = 4000.
640/.16=4000

when you are reducing something by 84%, then only 16% remains, so you cannot divide by 84%, because then your number has only been reduced 16% from the original

You had a number, took away 84% of it, and wound up with 640. This translates to x - 0.84x = 640. Solve for x to find the original number. You should end up with 4000. If you're looking for its inverse, just take 1/x.

0.16x = 640
(16/100)x = 640
x = (640*100)/16
x = 4000

So 1/x = 1/4000

depends what you mean with "reduced" by a percentage 84%

this :

X84/100 = 640 ( given )
thus X = 640 * 100/84

or this
X - X84/100 = 640
thus X = 640 * 100/16
