The body weight must be calculated precisely in a hanging. If the drop is not sufficiently long, the person will strangle, and if it's too long, the weight of the person, combined with the momentum, will decapitate the body. In the case of Saddam's brother, they should have used a rope about 18" less than they did.

Hanging Decapitation

If you drop them hard and fast enough it has been known to happen. However, it isn't common, as I understand it. I didn't watch the video's of Saddam's hanging, but from the picture all the papers ran before they opened the trap door, there was a cover to the rope. I assumed that was to prevent decapitation. However, if it were me, I might rather it was so fast my head came off than that I gently and slowly died of lack of oxygen.

There are reasons we don't use hanging in the US any more.

No not for sure. There is only about a 20% chance that you will get pregnant for normal women. If you are ttc and you haven't visited your obgyn now would be the time. She can give you as much information as you need and make sure you are healthy. But that being said don't use the 20% thing as a form of birthcontrol. You have a possibly of getting pregnant everytime you have sex unprotected and without birthcontrol.

The down force created by the falling body is directly transferred to the rope at the end of the fall. If the distance is too long, the force of the fall will be greater than the force required to sever the head, thus creating decapitation. Also, if a rope that is too narrow is used, the result will be the same with a much smaller fall, as the energy of the rope will act as a knife.

Man made fibers like nylon don't have any give to them, they can cut human flesh. Ropes made of natural fibers are "Softer" and generally do not cut into flesh as easily.
Now if a noose is properly constructed it will snap your neck when your body weight is applied suddenly, the only thing holding your head on is the skin, and the ligaments and muscle tissue. If a nylon rope is used and the rope cuts deep into the flesh there isn't enough supporting tissue to keep your head on the body.

Physics, I don't know the math but it used to happen a lot when hanging was the preferred method of capitol punishment in the old west. That's one of the reasons it is only used by Utah in the USA.

Hanging puts a lot of stress on the neck muscles & cervical spine. Depemding on the weight of the person being hanged, the height of the drop & the strength of his neck muscles & spine, the force could (& sometimes does) rip the head off the body. People are making too big a deal about it. While it has to look gruesome, it is certain that he died instantly.

Too much slack in the rope times too far of a distance to fall = increased velocity which would lead to this.
