)Pollution: Water, air, land and noice pollution exists as SO2 were emitted by factories and vehicals. Toxic waste enters the river; soild waste dumped in landfills; too much noice in the city.
)Population: Big cities means huge population, and it'll continue to grow bigger and bigger. It'll be a huge burden for the economy, land carrying capicity and resources distrubtion.
)Congestion: Linked with the population problem. More citizen in a city, more vehicals and thus, traffic will be congested. Not enough of living space will also occur.
)Crime rate: As the city grow bigger, keen competition on job occupation will occur. Many people cannot earn their living and thus, go commit crime.
)Economy: Dense population require huge sum of money from the government, such as construction of infrastructure, providing different types of social welfare, education and health expenditure etc.
)Attack from others: This one sounds crazy, but it's happening. As a city grow large, it'll become an 'enemy' for others. Political, military, economy, history... anything could be the reason why. For example, as Shanghai grow bigger, it'll suffers 'attack' from cities like Tokyo and HK as they're competitors in businesses with tariff; Large cities like New York suffers from the 911 incident because of the political reason, and terriost will not crush the planes in the small towns in US, but the large ones for sure.
)Urban planning: The government must carry out more urban planning, consider much frequent urbal renewal. Calculate the possibilities/pros and cons of urban expension etc. In order to help strike a balance between the urbanlization and natural environment.
To conclude, big cities require more money as they have much expenditure. Good and detailed planning is needed in order to avoid pollution, attacks, environmental degradation, economic recession and other urban problems. Bigger the city, better the government and policies needed.
