I am getting a new computer, but not sure if I should get a home computer or a lap top. Which would be better? I already have a computer, but it will be for my kids and the new one will be for me and my school work.

I crack up at the people who answer that Mac is the only way to go.

Anyway.....

The biggest thing I would suggest considering is whether or not you need to be mobile with your new computer. If you do, there isn't a decision. Tossing your desktop over your shoulder to take with you would be a real burden.

If you will always be sitting at a desk in your home, I would go with the Desktop. Desktops are more robust and will typically last longer because it is easier and cheaper to replace items like the monitor and keyboard. With a desktop computer you will also get more computer for your buck.

As far as the Mac thing, they are good machines, but you would need to get used to a completely different computing experience, and you would have more trouble finding compatible hardware and software, although that is becoming less of a problem.

Consider your own mobility needs when making the desktop/laptop decision. There are excellent machines in both designs.

One more thing.......If you go with a laptop, don't skimp on price and buy the extended service contract. Laptops tend to get banged around and you will be glad you spent the extra money. If you need to be price conscious, (under $1000) I would suggest going with a desktop.

Depends on what you like more

Home computers are usually more powerful as they are capable of more storage and ram (space and speed), it can easily take new drives and ram as well if you are interesting in upgrading.

A laptop at the same speed and performance will cost more, but you can take it anywhere, and you get wireless Internet with the package.

So decide for yourself which advantages you would prefer

I'm sort of in the same boat. I am choosing to get an Mac Desktop this time. The reason behind this choice is that my kids can use it for all sorts of things, plus they can couple their Christmas iPods to it rather effortlessly. Also because it's a desktop, I don't have to worry about it being dropped nor will I have to ask where is it!

If it's for school work, you might consider that a laptop would be useful for taking to class with you to take notes. You can also hit the local coffee shop between classes :)

If the new computer is for your personal use, probably a laptop. They're not too expensive (MOST) and super stylish. But most importantly they're portable for on the go work!

The biggest question is do you have wireless access at home? I have both desktop and laptop and prefer my laptop. I can take it anywhere on my property and do work or surf the net. I also take it to work.

you should get a laptop if you travel, or move around.

if you value speed, and need to do a lot of typing, then go for a desktop pc.

regardless of which one you choose, you should get a mac. they're a bit more expensive, but definately worth it.
