Here is the answer, and lots of police officers don't know it. You have to have two license plates on your car ONLY if two license plates were issued for it. However, some types of plates (dealers plates, transporter plates, etc.) are only issued singly. It is not illegal to operate a car with ONE of those plates on it. (It is easy to tell whether the plate is lawful, because they are all distinctive.)

If the vehicle is properly registered in a State which issues only one plate, it is also lawful to operate the vehicle in California with only one plate. However, for ordinary registration in California such as most people have, two plates are issued, and two must be affixed.

No it's not. All cars and trucks must have fron and rear plates no matter what. those people that you see driving around with only 1 are very lucky, and ignorant. those who are pulled over with only one plate will get a fix it ticket.

It is illegal to only drive with one. If you insist on only having one, make sure it is the rear. Most cops won't stop you for not having the front, and worst case it is a fix it ticket.

Of course not. Why would they issue you TWO plates if you only had to display one?
