I have a Web site whose pages are XHTML 1.0 Strict, and the vast majority of them are valid pages, according to the W3C validation page. Some of the pages are not valid, however, as I use some items such as target="_blank" and ol start="26" and stuff like that.
My question is, if my pages aren't valid, is there any penalty or any other type of problem that could hurt my site's popularity?

Well, just wanted to let you know that tager=_blank isn't deprecaetd (at least last time I checked). I write in XHTML 1.1, and have always had my pages validate. the start attribute may be deprecated, i have never used it, but i don't think target is (unless I have really been missing something).
If your pages are valid you can get the W3 image at the bottom of your page saying your pages are valid, but that's about it. In the future, some web browsers may only accept valid pages, but thats still a long time away.

Well, search engines can easier index valid web pages so it's better for you ranking, and it's also easier to maintain. Good job btw, making them valid XHTML 1.0 Strict :D
