I'm thinking about buying a new video card and was wondering what are all the things I need to be aware of when buying a new card

Check for processor speed (core clock) and amount of RAM.

Well the most important thing is making sure it will work in your system. Check if you have an AGP or a PCI-E slot on your motherboard. You want to look at memory size, and how fast it can process. Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/ they have tons of reviews on pretty much every card out there.
