it is a naval thing ships flying the yellow duster were signalling to other ships that they were carrying disease and were not to be boarded as it was an unclean ship

It's quite simple. The yellow colour makes the dust on the cloth easy to see. Even on a duster thats been shaken out and used for awhile, you can still see where the new dust has collected.

for such a simple question you sure got a lot af answers. But your question is unclear to me as well as many that answered. There are many so called "dusters" and there is not a single duster that I know about, that is just yellow in color. If it is something to pick up dust it would be a light color (yellow) to show off the dust you picked up, but they come in many colors. The car duster cam in many colors also, many different colors every year they were on the market. I use to maint many of them.

Dusters are yellow because yellow is a bright colour, and grey is a muted colour.

So that it's easy to see if the duster's been used, and how much dust is being dusted? Dust = grey, duster = yellow, high contrast.

They aren't. Only the low men wear yellow dusters.

Look at these http://www.walkabout.com/shop/oil_cloth_outerwear.asp

Did you mean Plymouth Dusters? 'Cause my brother had a GREEN one of those.

Did you mean feather dusters? Those are usually brown.
Did you mean SWIFFER dusters? They are blue.

Did you mean ladies' housecoats, sometimes called dusters? Because most of THOSE are flowered.

Exactly what type are you asking about?
Feather dusters come in all colors as well as the ones you wear over your clothes

really, in indonesia we have all sorts of color. red.. blue. not that i ahvent seen yellow. but well the most common is natural chicken feather, brown.

anyways i think in a psychological sense, because yellow looks clean, while on the other hand not easy to get dirty. if it were black, it will never look dirty, but the color black itself looks unclean. if it's white, it's very easy to get the dirty look. what about other colors? well do you want orange dusters, blue.. red. i think they wud b rather funny looking. yellow FTW!
