Please help: a lot of nights I sleep so heavily that I sleep through my alarms in the morning and I oversleep. It doesn't seem to depend on how much sleep I get or what quality it is, and the problem isn't that my alarms aren't loud enough. I have six alarms, but many mornings they just don't wake me up.

What can I do to ensure I wake up on time?

Well this is a medical condition and you are probanly sleeping to the point if loosing your breath at night. Do you snore? I do not know the technical term but you are never getting into REM sleep and therefor never get enough sleep. The doctor can do a test on you and I have a friend who actually has to sleep with a machine over his face at night. He has been getting much better sleep and gets up much easier in the morning now. But def. go to your doctor. This can be a serious thing if you do not fix it now.

I have a similar problem. It's terrible. I feel like a big failure when I can't get up. I try to get into a proper routine in the evening. Do calm relaxing things, avoid caffeine and other drinks and food, don't try too hard to sleep, make sure I am comfy in bed. It does help sometimes. also putting a few drops of lavendar oil on pillow helps sleep to come. This isn't really your question I know but if you get to bed before 10pm at night you should be able to get up at the time needed. Try and avoid the dr as they will probably decide you are depressed. You may however have sleep apnoea. Do you fall asleep in the day? If so, do see the doc and get checked for that. Good luck.

Although you're describing it as just an inconvenience, that can be quite serious. It may indicate a medical problem, perhaps something like sleep apnea. If you can't wake up no matter when you go to bed, it's likely that you're in fact not getting a real night's sleep. It's important to find out why, and at least rule out life-threatening issues like sleep apnea.

But even if there is no medical reason whatsoever, the social consequences are still extremely serious. If you can't show up for work on time, you can't hold a job.

Treat it like the serious problem that it is. Talk to your doctor about going to a sleep clinic.

You might have Delayed Sleep-Wake Syndrome, this is a problem best solved with proessional help, I recommend the American Academy of Sleep Medicine website. In addition to information about sleep medicine, the website also contains a list of accredited Sleep Centers and may help you to locate one nearest you.

Talk to Dr. If not a problem, get a shocker. It will hook up to you, give you a little shock to wake up. (I know people have used such things for bed wetters.) Or try getting on a routine of waking everyday at same time. even weekends. Eventually your body should adjust. Or again, zap yourself.

Please go to your doc - this sounds like you need professional advice at this stage. I have a hellish sleep pattern but I am probably a lot older than you and have got used to it. Anyway, you check your health and don't worry about things too much. Good luck.

Have you ever thought about getting married?
My spouse knees me in the bum or say my name REALLY loud.
That will do it.

If that doesn't work you may want to put your lights on a timer so they will turn on when it is time to get up.
Good luck
