if you hold it on the very top where the gas comes out before you open the gas, it will probably just blow out the match, with a pop, if the gas is low and the air inlet is open sufficently then it will light gently. if the air inlet is closed it will quench the match

The question is somewhat ambiguous. There are two valves that need to be opened for the bunsen burner to work. One valve is on the burner, the other is on the valve the tube is connected to. If the bench valve is closed and the burner valve is open, there is still no gas supply and no flame.

If you mean hold the match at the top to the valve opening then nothing. The oxygen/gas balance is off.

If you are refering to holding a match to the top of the bunsen burner (where the flame would come out) the you would light the gas which would then burn with a blue flame.

The reason why you are advised to close the valve is that in many cases the gas will burn so fast that it will blow its self out, and the gas would start escaping into the lab, unburnt.

This is not always that case as it will also depend on atmospheric conditions, gas pressure etc.

Its just a precaution to keep it closed when lighting.

quote: "The match will be blown out. The burner can only be lit with a yellow flame (valve closed)."

Untrue, you can light it with the valve open, its just not recommended cos if you walk away someone could burn themselves as the blue flame is ALOT hotter and quite hard to see (if you're not paying attention).

Burner won't light because there is too much air. Close the valve until lit.
