Yes of course it's part of being human.
Servers ARE human too !!
If you are a friendly person and you show it I'm sure the server will reciprocate because to do that job, you have to be friendly.

Just a little bit, but not like trying to make them my best friend. It could be the weather, a piece of jewelry, or what's going on in town that night. The servers that make a little small talk are often the ones that get extra tips from me.

I hate when a waiter or waitress is overly friendly. Their job is to be nice and accomodating, but not to bother me by talking all the time!

Depends if they are busy, if the waitress even wants to talk etc..

If it's not overly busy, yes. I frequent the same places a lot so I usually have the same servers and get to know them

I go out & eat alone alot so I always welcome any social interaction with the waitstaff or a waitress. I never try to pick one up though cuz it jsut makes me feel sleazy.

of course! why not be friendly to the person that is handling your future meal?!?! i was just in an upscale restaurant downtown in chicago called "gibson's"...and the waiter we had that was serving us, was great! we got to talking to this guy, and turns out he whispered to us and said, "wayne gretzsky, meg ryan, jamie foxx, and fantasia are here, but in the vip room...dont tell anyone" and we got to see wayne and meg that night! so being nice and warm to waiters has its' perks sometimes! :)
