a favorite of mine.. not sure if it's true.. if a Brit says "knock me up" it means call me on the phone. To an American it means "get me pregnant". Could cause a raised eyebrow, depending what side of the Atlantic you are on.

bonnet- the hood of a car in the UK, here an old-fashioned head covering

flat- apartment in the UK

petrol- gasoline (both in the UK and other places)

Probably the most wide spread is football- everywhere else in the world it is what Americans call soccer. Here in the US, football is played with an oval ball, and it is mostly played with the hands.

flat in England = apartment
thongs(sandals on west coast, underwear everywhere else)

'knock me up' in the UK doesn't mean call me on the phone. It did mean 'wake me up' (from 'knockers up who went round streets near a factory in the 19th century knocking on bedroom windows with a pole to wake workers up). It can now mean, as the other answer said 'get me pregnant'. However it is unlikely to be used in that tense - more like 'he knocked her up' (got her pregnant)

Fortnight = two weeks, Don't think that is used in America

There are 2 I can think of:
1. screw. In US it's slang for intercourse.
In UK it means "salary".

2. corn. It US it's maize. In UK it's a general
term for wheat or grains.
