We use technology to measure certain properties of the atmosphere. Technology is also used to compile and analyze the collected data (computer models). These properties a analyses help us to form theories and predictions in the field of meteorology.

The technology which has had the greatest impact on meteorology in the past forty years has been the launch of meteroological satellites around the globe. This includes geostationary satellites at 22000 miles above the equator and polar orbiting satellites. These satellites measure atmospheric temperature, water vapor, surface conditions such as snow and ice cover, sea surface wind speeds, and precipitation estimates, not to mention very high definition digital imagery of clouds both day and night.

Another contribution from technology has been the creation of super computers able to digest data from the entire globe and from the surface to the ionosphere twice a day and from satellites as the data is received. This has greatly improved the accuracy of numerical weather prediction models developed by the National Weather Service.

Still another major contribution to more regional and local forecasting has been the introduction of Doppler radar which can detect and track violent storms such as tornadoes which in the past could not be tracked or visualized on more conventional radars of even thirty years ago.

These have been the major technological contributions to meteorology.

As we put up more satellites, build better computers and write better programs and collect more data more quickly, our weather predictions improve.
