What an interesting question! As founder member of the Dungle Village Egyptology Society, I am fascinated by Ancient Egypt and in particular the meaning behind the pyramids. I have been to Egypt on three occasions and surveyed many of them.

There are hidden truths and these will be revealed in due course I am sure. My tentative conclusion is that they served two main purposes:

1. Burial chambers for the Pharaohs.

2. A gigantic oven harnessing the power of the Sun and used for cooking the bread required for the Egyptian population pending the death of the Pharaoh.

Conclusion 1 is generally agreed upon by all authorities.
Conclusion 2 is the subject of my thesis I am submitting to the British Museum next week.

Hope this helps.

Most here are basically correct. The Pyramid is a tomb, its religious significance was that it tied the Pharaoh to the sun. His ba (soul) did not, however, climb the pyramid to reach heaven. The shape of the pyramid is supposed to represent the primordial mound from which Ra was born. Sympathetically, the Pharaoh's ba would have been reborn as the sun, into the afterlife and he would become a shining being, taking his place among the stars.

The pyramids served to honor the great kings of that time. They were so elaborate because their prize possessions were buried with them. Stories of their life were written on the walls in the language of that time. Unfortunately, archaeologist find it legal to dig them up to study them. I still it is desecration of a grave no matter how you look at it. Possessions ARE TAKEN TO MUSEUMS AS WELL AS THE Corps. In those days they felt it was important to honor their kings and families, so this is why we have pyramid. Many were hidden to prevent theft of valuable object. The Egyptians felt that by building the pyramids and filling them with certain prize objects, it would help them move on to the next word and become gods.

I really liked someone who said that they were sun dials. Who would go to so much trouble to buile duch a gigantic sun dial, which doesn't evan look like a sun dial.
Pyramids are generally considered to be tombs for pharaos. Egyptians really believed in the aftrelife and it was very important for the pharaoh to have a wonderful tomb to wake up in in the aftrelife.
Of course, there have been claims that they represent ther stars in Orion's belt and this would give them some occult significance. That has been proven not true on various discovery documentaries.
Reality is usually much more boring than we imagine it to be. Sorry

The Great Pyramid was there when the Egyptians got there. They tried in vain to copy it with inferior models.I believe it is a monument to weights and measures left by the pre-flood descendants of Noah(mainly Enoch).Knowing that the flood would wipe everything out.It is the only one that had no hyroglephics in it ,and no one was buried in the red granite sarcophagus, which by the way is the exact same measurement as the Ark of the Covenant.

I think the ancient Egyptians were just really forward thinkers and wanted the future inhabitants of the world to have a conversation piece or two to reminisce about the good ol' days.

its a mystery, there are many reasons put forward, including sundials, star charts and the curious truth that organic matter placed in a pyramid stays fresher than the same stuff in another shaped object and putting razor blades in pyramids keeps them sharp.

I thought they were tombs - where the pharoahs could wait for the afterlife.
