i twisted my ankle last week and its still quite painful. it is quite tender if touched or knocked and hurts when i walk. should i bandage it up to restrict its movement or just leave it alone and take some painkillers? i work as a teaching assistant so my job is quite active, which doesn't help when i'm trying to rest my ankle up!

also, what is the best way to bandage something? does it need to be quite tight or will that just make it worse? any other remedies welcome!

Well i treat sprains, strains, fractures all day everyday in my job.Firstly have you been for an x-ray to rule a fracture or a torn ligament ? If not you should,as if you leave this the injury will get worse not better, you will need the correct treatment plaster cast etc.If you have been for an x-ray and its a sprain you should wear a tubigrip for extra support and some crutches if the pain is that bad, just so you can partial weight bear.Kepp the foot elevated while resting higher then you heart, and do rest when you can as if you dont your ankle and toes will always be swelling up.Apply a cold compress on the ankle but not directly on the skin this will help get some off the swelling down, always check for the circulation in the toes,as if your toes are turning blue or are very white, the circulation is being stopped some where in the foot and this can lead to alot off problems.Take regular pain relief ones with anti-inflammatry in.Well good luck to you if you want more advice email me.

The best way i found is the word R.I.C.E.Which means,Rest,Ice,Compression,Elevation.I see that you are a teaching assistant so you are on your feet most of the day, this is not good an ankle injury needs to rest.Try using a compression bandage to support the ankle during work, but make sure you remove this when at home when resting, and try to keep the foot elevated. It will cure the problem but while you are on your feet it will take some time,Be patient,i know it is frustrating.Good luck

You may have ruptured some ligaments in which case it hurts like hell and will take a good few weeks to recover. Elevate the leg and use ice packs to keep the swelling down. Strap fairly tight but do not restrict the blood flow.
There's also the possibility that you may have fractured one of the many little bones in the foot. Best to get it x-ray'd to make sure but if you have it doesn't always mean you will have to wear a cast.
If you let a broken bone in the foot heal by itself then you will probably be asking for trouble later in life.
Get well soon..

I think when you are on it you should have it wrapped with an ace bandage, no too tight though. When you are at home, put it up on a table or something higher that your heart, this helps to reduce the swelling and ice it. I had an ankle problem like this and ended up having surgery 2 years later due to complications. This is what they told me to do. Good luck!

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

If you have not already seen a doctor about it, you should. There could be some bone damage or breaking, and if this is not treated and heals incorrectly on its own, it could turn into a lifelong problem with your ankle or something that will require surgery to fix.
See your doctor ASAP, it has been too long already.

Try tubigrip which can be bought from a chemist, supermarket. If you buy it from a pharmacy they can give advice on what size to use. Assuming it is sprained and nothing more (chipped broken etc) it should heal but really you should apply the following:

R.I.C.E.

Rest
Ice
Compress
Elevate

You should minimize the movement, but allow the circulation same time! (Tricky!!) So you need fast cure, try accupuncture! Works much better & faster than conventional medicine.
