I saw this suggested by another user... a non-religious "argument" against homosexuality is that it would wipe us out if it was the only sexual orientation in existence.
Anyone think we wouldn't be able to find a way to generate offspring?
Personally I think the human race should be given a little more credit than that. I consider us a pretty darned resourceful species. Then again, I'm not supposed to be answering my own question... sorry...

J.P., of course I've heard of it. *I* personally am not of the opinion that the human race would die out if everyone on earth was homosexual. I'm wondering if anyone out there really thinks this or if someone was just B.S.-ing to answer a question.

We'd keep right on trucking as a species.
Even right now, we have technologies like sperm donation, in-vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, that allow gay men and lesbians to reproduce. Things would only get better, and you're right- we're a danged resourceful species, and adapt quite well.
I hate it when anyone uses this as an argument against homosexuality- even if it dooms the human race (which it wouldn't), people are entitled to their human rights, which includes choosing who they want to have sex with. Not to mention that sexual orientation isn't something that can be consciously changed, so if everyone suddenly turned gay, there'd be no getting out of that. Maybe that's why nature has made it such a small percentage of the population? I can't say.
Hope that helps.

Well, this is true, but in the past before sperm donation and the like was created, the human race would have died out :> I'm gay, but I wouldn't want there to be no straight people in the world. I just believe homosexuality, heterosexuality, -everyone- should be equal, and on the same level as one another. No one sexuality is better than another. We can appreciate heterosexuals, and without them we wouldn't be here, would we! :P

This hypothetical situation seems unlikely. However, if it did somehow occur, it seems likely that humans would have alter heir current pattern of reproduction, or die out.
What we do know is this: the same genetic proclivity which predisposes some men to be good, nurturing fathers and loyal husbands, seems to cause other men (their younger brother for instance) to become gay.
Scientist speculate that the double-attributes of this gene prevent it from being eliminated by evolution.
A more likely scenario is that parents will one day, via genetic selection, eliminate all children suspected of becoming gay.
In this futuristic nightmare, we might achieve having only hetero children, but they could also lose the gene which helps them to form lasting marriages.

Assuming that gays and lesbians did not hate each other for any reason and adoption was an option - artificial insemination can help.
But since we were thinking in lines of "what if??" - what if, for the next several years we had only male children - (if we had only female children - then sperm banks from long ago can help). I think a big meteorite will hit us sooner than that.

well, not really, there's always artificial insemination, lots of gays and lesbians want kids so if they both agreed to donate eggs and sperm and be surrogates i see no reason why not..a gay and a lesbian could always have kids together but stay in their gay couples...they reckon soon the technology will exist to make an embryo from 2 eggs anyway

Naw, we would just borrow sperm from our gay male friends and the children would be raised by all sorts of loving parents.
Plus, imagine how much better the world would be in so many ways (poverty, starvation, rampant diseases in overpoulated places) if there were no more unplanned pregnancies.

Have you ever heard of artificial insemination?
Lots of gay guys take certain matters 'in hand' often enough. They'd just start doing it into a cup instead of a tissue or their blankets.
BTDT. ;)

well my guess is it would for sure go down in numbers but that occasional rebellious couple would keep us going. Then there will be testube babies soon. Silly question, unless you are allowing for those who think they would like a family and same sex partner too.

We are far to smart to let that happen-besides I don't think heterosexuality will go away just like homosexuality..
