What is meant by the phrase "Give it the old college try"?

It means to give a great effort. Originated from a number of college "rah, rah" football films of the 1930's and 40's.

My guess is that everyone tries everything in college: drugs, relationships/ encounters with the opposite/same gender, parties, etc. There's nothing most college students wouldn't do on a dare or just for the sake of trying it out.
