Marine paint is different than automotive paint. It has properties that resist corrosion and allow it to be submerged in water. Automotive paint MIGHT last 6 months in the water.

Well it would depend on the application. Are we talking above the true water line or below? Is the boat kept in the water for years at a time, just the season, or is it a trailer boat? If it is just a little 18' go fast that lives on a trailer, I would not have any problem spraying the entire hull with an automotive epoxy as it would only be in the water for a short time like 1 to 7 days, then put back on the trailer. If we are talking a larger boat that may see an entire season on the water then automotive paint would not be suitable BELOW THE WATER LINE! If used above the water line I would still want an epoxy based paint system for long life.

The under coating system is the important part being epoxy which is water proof .

the actual top coat can be any 2 pack being automotive or marine although marine paints are formulated especially for marine use.
