If you have a baby, you will have to wait till it's about 1 1/2 years old before you can tell them apart. All babys have characteristics of females. A good resource is www.triciaswaterdragon.com/sex.htm. This is written for the Chinese water dragon, which is a close relative, but will work for Aussies, too. You will need to know if you want to keep more than one (2 males will fight) or you have a female - they will need a place to lay eggs! Water dragon females lay eggs whether they are with a male or not. If there's no male, the eggs won't be fertile though. If you don't provide a spot to lay eggs, the female won't release the eggs and she could die. They also need extra calcium in their diet for the egg shells.

It's very hard to tell, but wait until it's close to 16 to 18 inches. Male properties are: -The head grows like a triangles -The spikes on the neck and back get longer -On the back, under the spikes, bone/cartilage sticks up about half an inch -There's sooooo many triangle shapes from it :P (a female has pear shapes and has a round tail)
