When did your periods return? I always thought it doesn't come back until after you stop nursing, but I just got mine and I am still nursing my 71/2 month old son, although I have slowed down on how many times he nurses. Will this affect him nursing at all?

It's different for everyone. Some moms get theirs early on. Some never get theirs the whole time they nurse. Some find that their period returns soon after starting solid foods. Sleeping through the night is also a big factor in mom's return to fertility.

With my first, my period returned at 10 mos.
With my second, my period returned at 9.5 mos even though I was tandem nursing.
With my third, my period didn't return until she was 16 months.

I think every child is different. With my first my period didn't come back till he was 9 months and I was still nursing him all the time. With my second it came back after 4 months. It doesn't affect your children at all just be careful if you don't want to get pregnant again real soon. A lot of women think that just because they aren't getting a period means they won't get pregnant. This isn't true. Getting on birth control will make your milk dry up so make sure you get the no hormone one....I believe it's call the mini pill.

Sometimes it starts when you begin feeding more solids or supplementing with formula because his nursing releases hormones through your body. When you aren't getting a constant supply of those hormones you return to fertility. It will not affect the baby in any way but be careful unless you want to have a baby this close to your son.

Your period usually returns with the introduction of solids.

It can effect the taste of the milk and some babies will go on a nursing strike but a strike does not mean baby is ready to wean. Children RARELY self wean before the age of 2

Some women don't get their period back until they wean, but others (myself included) get theirs back when their babies are still nursing.

Breastfeeding stimulates your body to produce hormones that act as a natural birth control. With these hormones present in the body at all times, most women will not ovulate or have a period.

Some women will notice that their periods come back after their babies start sleeping through the night. Without that constant stimulation at the breast and the constant level of hormones in the body, their body decides to start ovulating and menstruating again.

Also, if you're offering solids, formula, or pacifiers, this will limit the frequency of the baby's nursing, which, in turn, will lower the level of hormones in your body and cause your period to come back.

I was shocked just like you. I thought I wouldn't get my period until he weaned. But, at about 8 months, I got my first period. He will be 1 yr tomorrow and is still nursing. It hasn't affected him nursing at all. I have noticed that my cycle isn't the same as it was before. Before I got pregnant, I was 28days on the dot even without birthcontrol. Now that it's returned, it's anywhere from 28 - 31days. And let me tell you, it was CRAZY the first period after having him. Bled like crazy, shorter duration, but bled like crazy. Let me know if you have any other questions.

For some woman yes infact it doesnt return till after you stop nursing but for some it could return any time from within the first few months or so once your uterus has had a chance to heal.

You period can come back even when you nurse full time.
After my first one, my period came back after 2 months and I was only nursing. I also heard that you can't get pregnant as long as you nurse - IT'S NOT TRUE! I got pregnant when my son was 5 months old.

I started while nursing with 2 and once I stopped with the other one. It is different for everyone. The only difference is that your milk will taste different to him when your one your period but not too bad. He will still nurse. Good job being a good mommy.

It won't affect his nursing, but as he gets older and eats more solid foods and nurses less, you will have less milk. Remember that you're fertile again so use birth control if you don't want a little brother or sister! Your periods may be light and very irregular as long as you continue nursing.
