Those big ones are difficult; but first try a cat. Wherever there's a cat you see no rats. Then buy two "big" glue traps, and place them in the corners where they turn near the wall; because they run next to the walls in the floor.
Put some cheese in one of them, (second one); because if he gets trapped in the first, and because he is big, he is going to run to the second one, and there is where you will catch it.
When you use glue traps you must put one near the other.
You don't see rats across; but linear, next to walls. So, any trap must be positionned exactly where he walks.

Since your dog is a concern, you could poison the rat more easily if the poison was somewhere out of reach: on a high shelf where you've seen rat droppings, or in a bait box on the ground with a hole that only the rat can get into. Since it's smart, it might not go for the bait box.
It's also a good idea to prep the rat before you poison it. Pick a spot it frequents, out of the dog's reach, and leave some table scraps there. When the scraps are gone, leave some rat bait, in a brand you've never used before. This way the rat might not think anything's up, since the food it got here earlier was safe.
Also, get a steel trash can to keep your dog food in.

Use some rat poison to kill the bastard.
Have the dog shack up with you inside until you catch the critter, then once the rat poison is removed from the back yard, let your beloved pooch out there again.
Either that, or blow the rats nuts off with a gun (ridiculous method to get rid of it i know) he he

The larger rats will escape from the traditional Victor Rat traps, although sometimes they are fatally injured. The 'TomCat' rat trap will snap on its head. Try using peanut butter or pepperoni for bait. Place the trap along a wall where it runs
